Pomegranates have been cultivated for millennia and are deeply symbolic of power and vitality in many cultures. Images of the fruit have adorned the spears of elite fighting units, priestly robes, temple walls, royal scepters and even the starry crown in the constellation of Osiris (Orion). A Pomegranate is central to the myth of Persephone, whose abductor Haides, god of the underworld, gave her the sensual ruby red fruit to eat before allowing her return to her mother Demeter. The jeweled red seeds she innocently plucked and ate condemned her to return to the underworld yearly, spending one month for each seed eaten. Her mother mourned her daughter by refusing to let anything on earth grow during this period. This period of mourning became our winter.
